If you find yourself dating the same types of partners over and over again you are not alone.
You may even say that when a relationship ends you will never date someone like your ex again. Researchers have found that no matter how many times you say this, you are still going to fall for someone similar.
In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences a study found that the idea of people having a “type” is true. Researchers used data from an ongoing study of 332 peoples dating history over multiple years. They survey these people and their partners on their own personality traits related to agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, and openness to experience. After comparing results between participants and their partner’s researchers concluded…
“The primary finding was the existence of a significant consistency in the personalities of an individual’s romantic partners.”
In the future if you find yourself dating someone similar to an ex it may not be as bad as you think. Knowing the similarities in personality of your new and old partner may allow you to transfer skills and strategies you’ve already learned and work out a better outcome than before.
